Therapeutic indications

Agovirax Lozenges can be used for the prevention and supportive treatment of common cold and flu-like illnesses and serve to moisten the lining of the mouth and throat.

  • For prevention and supportive treatment of viral infections of the upper respiratory tract.
  • For moistening the mouth and throat in the case of dry breathing air, cough or hoarseness for example.
  • For prevention and supportive treatment of all complaints resulting from a dry and/or irritated oral and pharyngeal mucosa.

Mode of Action

What are the properties Agovirax® Lozenges?

The mucosa of mouth and throat and the nose are the main routes of viral infections resulting in common cold and flu-like illnesses. A dry lining of the mouth and throat is less resistant against cold viruses. If viruses get into the oral cavity they attach and infect mucosal cells resulting in multiplication and spread.

The oral and pharyngeal mucosa can function as a barrier against external influences only when sufficiently moistened. Frequent stays in locations with low relative humidity like e.g., heated or air-conditioned rooms, cars, trains, or aeroplanes may cause a dry and irritated lining of the mouth and throat. Also, intense physical straining of the throat like singing, long speaking or smoking can result in dryness of mouth and throat mucosa. Consequences can be cough, hoarseness or sore throat.

Agovirax® Lozenges contain Carragelose®, a marine substance derived from red algae. Carragelose® has a dual positive effect.

  • Agovirax® Lozenges forms a protective barrier against a large variety of viruses, examples are rhinoviruses and coronaviruses. Carragelose® non-specifically envelopes these cold viruses and prevents their adhesion to mucous membranes. Accordingly, the proliferation and spreading of the viruses causing common cold is reduced.
  • Agovirax® Lozenges form a moisturizing protective film which supports the body’s natural defences against viruses.
